John, sign the petition: demand chocolate companies end using child labor!
Hershey’s, Nestlé, and Mars: these might be the manufacturers of your favorite candy, but did you know they exploit children as young as five years old for free labor? It's true — these corporations fuel child labor and slavery on cocoa farms across West Africa. Children are taken from their homes and paid low or sometimes no wages to work long hours in brutal conditions on these farms.
Although these companies have faced scrutiny and calls for reform for decades, they've made no effort to move away from this "business model." The inaction has gone on for far too long — thousands of children have suffered. Global child welfare advocates have filed a suit urging the federal government to prohibit the import of cocoa harvested by child labor. That seems to be the only way this brutal exploitation will be stopped.
We support this lawsuit, but it's not enough. Hershey’s, Nestlé, and Mars must take accounability and immediately cease the use of child labor. This exploitation is absolutely unacceptable and these corporations must commit to totally eliniminating use of child labor. NOW.
