Only days into the new year we were greeted with tragic news – a weeks-old North Atlantic right whale calf was struck and fatally injured by a vessel.
Again.
Perhaps the most tragic part of this incident is that it could have been entirely avoided. Despite several deadly vessel strikes in recent years, the Biden administration’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has delayed the process of finalizing a vessel speed rule that would require vessels of the size that hit the calf to slow down to a safer speed.
With fewer than 340 North Atlantic right whales remaining, if the species is to avoid extinction, we must take immediate action.
Tell NOAA to strengthen protections for one of the most endangered whales on the planet before it’s too late.
