The Michigan Republican Party is a hot mess. Here’s a quick summary of the last few months:

2024 kicked off with Kristina Karamo at the helm of the state party. You may remember Karamo: she was the Republican Nominee for Secretary of State in 2022 and believes abortion is “child sacrifice” and “a very satanic practice.”

The infighting has been intense, culminating in multiple votes to remove Karamo as chair. Her main rival for the position is Pete Hoekstra, Trump’s ambassador to the Netherlands, who recently said he welcomes candidates for party positions who believe in QAnon.

Trump weighed-in to support Hoekstra, as did one of our opponents, former Congressman Mike Rogers, QAnon notwithstanding.

With less than a month till the presidential primary here in Michigan, this fight between the dueling leaders of the Michigan GOP is bound to heat up.

In other words, we’re up against a far-right GOP here in Michigan – a party that has proven over and over they will kiss Trump’s ring and do whatever it takes to make sure he wins the state. As Elissa has said, we can’t fix the Republican Party, much as we wish we could. But what we can do is defeat these extremists at the ballot box over and over again, until the Party of Lincoln decides to walk another path.
