John, the No. 3 House Republican and “possible Trump VP pick” Elise Stefanik attacked me on CNN this week, but it was so much bigger than that:

Stefanik claimed she would have blocked legitimate votes on January 6, 2021, if she had been in Mike Pence’s position as vice president.

Stefanik is sending a clear signal to Trump — if you attempt an insurrection a second time, I will help ensure it succeeds. It’s a recipe for the greatest Constitutional crisis since the Civil War, and she should be ashamed to ever show her face in public again.

There is no other way to say it — MAGA Republicans are determined to destroy our democracy if they lose. Period. They have forsaken any allegiance to the Constitution or their oath of office — nothing but power matters to them — and they represent the most dangerous threat our democracy faces. When Liz Cheney said she would not propagate the Big Lie, a lie that tore at the foundation of our free and fair elections, Elise Stefanik put up her hand and effectively agreed to tell any lie the GOP leadership wanted if she could have Liz’s job. They gave it to her.
Last month, Stefanik went on The Roger Stone Show to smear the impeachment hearings I led against Donald Trump — during which Fox News called her the “main Schiff antagonist.”
Stefanik’s campaign has run vile, racist digital ads saying that “Radical Democrats” are planning “a PERMANENT ELECTION INSURRECTION via AMNESTY” — some of the most extreme “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory rhetoric we’ve seen from a member of GOP leadership, and the kind more often espoused by white supremacists, Neo-Nazis, and Tucker Carlson.

And the other night, she had this to say about me:

“I’m proud to be one of the top surrogates for President Trump…I worked with him on his impeachment defense team when the first witch hunt started against him, perpetrated by the Democrats and Adam Schiff.”
