John — Since 1976, February has been dedicated to honoring Black history and culture and for recognizing the profound impact Black people from across the diaspora have had on our world.
At We Dream in Black (WeDiB), we love this time of year—we take every opportunity we can to bask in Black joy and strength. But we're not just looking back; we're propelling forward.
Inspired by N. K. Jemisin’s 2018 book, How Long ’til Black Future Month? and the Movement 4 Black Lives, we choose to envision February as Black Futures Month and look towards a future where all Black people will experience true freedom.
For WeDiB, Black Futures looks like giving power back to Black domestic workers, who are U.S. born and immigrants, of multiple gender identities and sexualities, and of varied class backgrounds and abilities—some of the most invisible, essential, and unprotected workers in our country.
We know that the domestic worker movement wouldn’t exist without the extraordinary Black workers who came before us. Today, we are seeking to transform the domestic work industry so that domestic workers can be protected in the workplace while at the same time shifting culture to center care collectively.
We believe a better future is possible, one in which Black women and caregivers experience abundant joy, safety, and well-being.
This February, let's not just celebrate Black history; let's commit to building a Black future where freedom and justice are not just ideals, but realities for every Black person.
To honor those who laid the foundation and those currently building the future we all deserve, we are unveiling weekly glimpses and photographs into the lives of Black domestic workers in our movement through our social media channels. Additionally, we'll publish a dedicated blog post addressing various themes within Black Futures Month that hold particular significance for domestic workers.
Join us as we march boldly into a future crafted by our collective dreams, resilience, and unstoppable spirit.

We Dream in Black (WeDiB) is the organizing home that centers the voices and experiences of Black, Afro-Latina and Afro-descendant domestic workers.
We focus on shifting the narrative about Black domestic workers across home care, childcare and housecleaning sectors, while developing the leadership of our base and raising the floor in the care industry through political action.
At WeDiB, our goal is to transform the domestic work industry, center collective care and disrupt the systemic and systematic harms that impact the lives of all Black women and domestic workers.
We believe a better future is possible, one in which Black women and caregivers experience abundant joy, safety and well-being – and your grassroots support is the fuel that can get us there.
