While they’re most often known for their astonishing size, thick, furry coats, and adoration of long winter naps, bears are one of the most intelligent and emotionally sophisticated animals.

Bears have large and complex brains and a keen memory. They can recall locations of hidden food year after year and have even been observed covering their tracks to avoid detection by hunters. Bears use tools, problem-solve, and form alliances — and even friendships.

Unfortunately, their incredible intellect is also why they are so often exploited in the entertainment industry where they are forced to perform tricks and live in captivity rather than experiencing the vast and wild lives they deserve. There are thousands of innocent bears trapped in this cruel and inhumane industry around the world — like Baloo a 23-year-old bear, trapped behind bars at a ski resort in Romania.

From the time he was a small cub, he's been treated like a roadside attraction. For food, he's given cornflakes and lemonade. Children poke at him with sticks. Sometimes, people even give him alcohol. This isn't the life any bear should live. But it's the only life Baloo has known.

Passionate animal advocates like you can help to ensure our critical fight against the exploitation of all animals, including Baloo. We just met with the Romanian government in December and delivered over 100,000 signatures demanding Baloo’s freedom. Now, we are continuing our fight on the legal front, challenging the ruling that is keeping him captive.
