Dear friend, February is Black History Month and marks an opportunity for all of us to unite and celebrate achievements of so many Black Ohioans who helped shape our state and nation. In particular, its important for us to highlight individuals like George Washington Williams, the first African American elected to the Ohio State House, and Lorraine native Toni Morrison, the first Black woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in literature. Their accomplishments should inspire all of us. | This week, I had the opportunity to meet with the Ohio Task Force Commanders Association in Washington. These brave men and women are an integral part of our public safety infrastructure throughout Ohio and the nation. They're on the frontlines combatting the fentanyl epidemic and helping crack down on domestic and international crime organizations. I’m committed to ensuring our brave men and women in law enforcement have the resources and tools necessary to do their jobs. That's why I'm proud to back bipartisan legislation to expand federal grants that allow state and local governments to recruit and retain law enforcement officers. | This week, I also sent joined my GOP colleagues in sending a letter to Paramount Global and CBS requesting they prevent a Chinese company accused of using forced labor from running ads during the Super Bowl. I'm working hard in Washington to ensure entities linked forced labor and the Chinese Communist Party are held accountable and not given a free pass. | I was proud to lead a bipartisan coalition of House and Senate lawmakers to introduce the Credit for Caring Act to ease the financial burden on caregivers. Every year more than 48 million Americans serve as caregivers for sick loved ones. That includes 1.4 million caregivers in Ohio alone. They make these sacrifices because they believe their loved ones should be able to live independently during their most vulnerable moments. From changing bed sheets to dressing wounds, caregivers selflessly offer their time and emotional health while asking for little in return. This comes at a cost, however. Roughly 78% of family caregivers face out-of-pocket costs associated with caring for a loved one. Our bipartisan bill creates a $5,000 non-refundable tax credit for family caregivers. It applies to caregiving expenses greater than $2,000. | This week, I had the opportunity to be part of the Alvis Amethyst recovery treatment program in Columbus. Amethyst is one of the only programs in Ohio that provides a safe and stable environment for women battling drug and alcohol addiction to seek help. Enrollees in the program are allowed to bring their children with them, ensuring that single mothers battling addiction do not have to decide between being a parent or getting sober. I was proud to play a small role in supporting the program's new graduates. These women have made the difficult decision to change their lives by seeking help for their addictions. I applaud them and wish them well as they enter this new chapter of recovery. | I ran for office to deliver real results for the people of central Ohio.
