Mayorkas (almost) Impeached

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives voted on two articles of impeachment brought against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayrokas. This wasn’t an issue of disagreeing over policy but rather the fact that “Mayorkas is actively nullifying and undermining those [immigration] laws.”

Mayorkas’ dereliction of duty has wreaked havoc on our country, leaving Heritage Action with no choice but to elevate his impeachment to a Key Vote.

Unfortunately, the vote failed 214 to 216 with Republican Reps. Mike Gallagher (Wis), Ken Buck (Colo.) and Tom McClintock (Calif.) voting against impeachment and Rep Steve Scalise (La.) not in attendance due to cancer treatment.

Republican Rep. Blake More (Utah) also voted against impeachment but as a tactical, procedural move. He originally voted in favor but then changed his vote to “Nay”, for procedural reasons, when it became clear impeachment would fail. Because he did this, Republicans will have a second chance at impeachment early next week when all representatives are gathered.

Heritage Action will maintain our Key Vote ‘Yes’ when the measure is brought to the floor again. We look forward to its success and demand a trial in the Senate. This fight is not over. Your members of Congress still need to hear how much you support the Impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas in the House and subsequent trial in the Senate. Don’t let Schumer use procedural maneuvers to evade the Senate’s responsibility to hold a fair trial!

What is happening with the Supplemental

The Senate’s supplemental spending bill fails Americans. Already $34 trillion in debt and counting, the Senate (at Biden’s request) proposed another $118 in “emergency” spending in addition to whatever Congress passes through the normal budgeting process this year.

In an attempt to leverage conservative support, the bill originally included “border security” provisions. Except these provisions would have made the crisis worse by codifying in law a crisis level of illegal immigration, while incentivizing more people to cross through an expansion of work permits, parole authority, and free services available to illegal immigrants.

Heritage Action issued a Key Vote ‘No’ and thanks to the work of conservatives across the country, the sham border deal was defeated with nearly every Republican voting in opposition. After this vote failed (49-50), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer introduced a second supplemental that just removed the open border policies but only included the other portions: more unaccountable funding to Ukraine, Israel, and humanitarian aid to Gaza (which would likely fall into the hands of Hamas terrorists).

Heritage Action quickly issued another Key Vote ‘No’ on this version, which fails to maintain the priorities of the American people by refusing to provide adequate oversight for Ukraine funding. Reports continue to surface about the level of corruption and mismanagement in the Ukrainian government. Congress must ensure that our tax dollars are not being misused, yet this bill fails to meet the mark.

In the second vote on this supplemental package (without the “border security” provisions),the Senate voted (67-32) to advance the bill to a final vote. Before they do, amendments to the bill will be debated and voted on through this weekend. It remains to be seen what the nature of the bill will be after this process. Heritage Action will keep a close eye on the final vote and make sure to provide updates.

SALT in the Wound

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) put a limit on how much Americans can deduct their State and Local Tax (SALT) from federal taxes. SALT deductions encourage high tax states to keep their taxes high or to raise them. And because the cost of federal tax deductions is spread among all U.S. taxpayers in the form of higher federal tax rates, the SALT deduction forces taxpayers in low-tax, low-debt states to subsidize the excessive government spending of high-tax, high-debt states.

SALT deductions should be repealed altogether, but a bill currently before the House seeks to raise those deductions. An increase in the limit that can be deducted would encourage blue states to raise taxes and cost $11.2 billion this year for Americans who earn less than $500,000.

As of this writing, it is unclear when this bill will receive a vote, but Heritage Action will be there when it does and keep you informed.

Updates from the States

Idaho
In a world of confusion and cowardice, the Idaho House of Representatives has taken a clear eyed stand in the defense of the truth by passing H. 421—a bill that accurately defines “sex” and “gender.”

In a press release, Heritage Action’s State Advocacy Director, Catherine Gunsalus wrote:

“President Biden and progressive activists want to pretend that gender is malleable, that men can compete in women’s sports without causing harm, and that children should be subjected to experimental surgeries. These lies are not only irresponsible and antithetical to science, they’re dangerous. Heritage Action is proud to stand alongside states like Idaho that are fighting for kids, parents, and the truth by passing legislation like H. 421 that clearly and accurately defines ‘sex’ and ‘gender.’”

It is now up to the Senate to pass H. 421 and send it to the Governor for his signature.

South Carolina

“ESG is one of the most harmful political tools used by the Left to impose their radical agenda on hardworking Americans who did not ask for it and will be worse off because of it.” That was Heritage Action’s South Carolina State Director, James Quarles’ response to the news that Gov. Henry McMaster had signed H. 3690 into law.

In the same press release, James wrote “H. 3690 is a big step toward protecting all South Carolinians and their hard-earned savings from unfair, politically-based investment decisions.”

Heritage Action looks forward to working with other states to pass similar legislation and protect the people’s hard-earned savings from unfair, politically-based investment decisions.
