LAX Coastal Education Foundation's 4th annual Spelling Bee for 2nd & 5th graders

Dear friends and partners,

As we head into a sun-soaked weekend, we are grateful for the efforts and flexibility of our school communities for keeping so many of our students dry and learning during the storm earlier this week. And we hope everyone is safe after today’s earthquake and thank our school communities for following safety protocols.

February also brings celebrations to our schools, starting with 100th day of school festivities. And while we elevate the contributions of our Black community all year long, we highlight these efforts during Black History Month. This weekend, we know that many of our students will commemorate the Lunar New Year, a lucky year of the Dragon. And, of course, who isn’t looking forward to the candy-induced energy our schools will see next week on Valentine’s Day?

Amidst the celebration, work continues to achieve academic success. We’ve learned more about the inequitable impact of the pandemic on learning ([link removed]) , but also that LAUSD is faring better than many other Districts. We are starting to see mid-year progress that we know will continue throughout this second semester.

In gratitude,

In the Community: The Latest from Board District 4
In the last couple weeks, my team and I were thrilled to join 3rd St Elementary's Lunar New Year Celebration, LAX Coastal Education Foundation's 4th Annual Spelling Bee, a Robotics Competition for LAUSD schools hosted at Fairfax High, Melrose Elementary's Beautification Day, Reading Day at Stoner Elementary with the NFL Rams, Playa Venice Rotary's Teacher Grants Event, meeting with Marquez Elementary teacher assistants, Fairfax High's Beautification Day in partnership with City Year, as well as visits to University High, WESM High, and Kenter Elementary!
In the Spotlight: Giving thanks for one of our hardworking teachers!

We are thankful for the hard work of all our school employees, including Olivia Lam, a 5th grade teacher at Rosewood STEM Magnet Elementary! She was born and raised in Hong Kong and earned her BA at Iowa State University. Olivia worked as a graphic designer for over 18 years, and overtime realized her skills were perfect tools to communicate with young students using visual aids and hands-on manipulatives. In her free time, she loves exploring science, visiting museums, and traveling. Thanks for all you do, Olivia!
