The deadline is approaching fast - Two pro-life bills must get a hearing by February 12
Dear John, Oregon’s first legislative session of 2024 kicked off this week, and pro-life advocates are already making their voices heard! Important deadlines are approaching quickly, and we need your help, John. What’s at stake Two vital pro-life bills must be scheduled for a hearing by February 12, or these bills die in committee. We need you to urge your legislator to request a hearing, and we’ve made it easy for you! Using our advocacy tool below, you can email your legislator at the click of a button with our
pre-crafted message requesting a hearing.
What is it about In the State Senate, SB 1536: Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act would protect unborn babies who can feel pain. There is scientific consensus that babies in the womb can feel pain at just 15 weeks after fertilization or even earlier. However, Oregon law allows providers to abort these pain-capable babies. In the State House of Representatives, HB 4108: Born Alive Infants Protection Act would protect babies born alive after failed abortions, requiring doctors to provide life-saving care. Babies who survive abortion attempts aren’t guaranteed any protections under federal law, and no state legislation fills in the gaps. That means babies who survive abortion can be left to die.
Why it matters There are currently no protections for unborn babies or abortion survivors in Oregon, which means these two bills are
crucial. However, these life-saving measures won’t move forward unless they’re scheduled for a hearing by the February 12 deadline. There’s no time to wait— email your legislator now to request a hearing.
