Rep. Loudermilk Joins House Republicans in Letter Demanding President Biden End His Ban on American LNG Exports

This week, Rep. Loudermilk (GA-11) joined a group of more than 150 of his House GOP colleagues in sending a letter to President Biden demanding him to end his ban on U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. President Biden's decision jeopardizes the stability and affordability of natural gas domestically, hurts the American economy, undercuts our allies, and strengthens our adversaries.

The letter was first reported by Fox News

KEY LETTER QUOTE: "We write regarding the announcement that the Department of Energy (DOE) will stop issuing indefinitely permits to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) while your administration conducts an additional “public interest” review, including environmental, economic, and environmental justice criteria. This is economically and strategically dangerous and unnecessary. Under both Democratic and Republican administrations, DOE has consistently found that U.S. LNG exports serve the “public interest” because they contribute positive economic benefits and strengthen energy security for the American people, and also have the potential to reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions."

Background

  • On January 26, President Biden froze the approval process for new U.S. LNG export sites, prioritizing the wishes of radical activists over U.S. energy security and the security of our allies.
  • Studies show that LNG exports could add upwards of $73 billion to the U.S. economy by 2040, create upwards of 453,000 American jobs, and increase U.S. held purchasing power by $30 billion.
  • Over the past seven years, the U.S. has increased its LNG export capacity from zero to 11.6 billion cubic feet per day. During the same period, the spot price of U.S. natural gas has remained relatively stable and affordable.
  • These actions will weaken global energy security, halt investment in American energy, and jeopardize U.S. energy leadership.

Rep. Loudermilk Joins Bipartisan Push to Block U.S. Software to TikTok

This week, Rep. Barry Loudermilk (GA-11) joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers in a letter calling for the Secretary of Commerce to add ByteDance – TikTok’s parent company – to the Commerce Department’s foreign entity list.

As ByteDance continues to operate in the U.S., the letter calls on the Biden Administration to use its authority to address the worst excesses of the app by preventing the transfer of U.S. software to ByteDance.

Key Letter Excerpts

There are serious issues with access to U.S. user data, and the relationship between ByteDance and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Despite misrepresenting their relationship in sworn testimony before multiple Congressional committees, TikTok’s software engineering personnel ultimately report to ByteDance leadership in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Moreover, any ByteDance data that is viewed, stored, or that passes through China is subject to the laws of China, a one-party authoritarian state hostile to American democracy.”

In fact, China’s 2021 Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law prohibits Chinese (and non-Chinese) entities – wherever they are located – from complying with foreign restrictions that impede the ability of Chinese businesses to operate in ways that advance the Chinese government’s interests. This law, of course, prohibits TikTok and ByteDance from complying with all U.S. Government and state regulations that regulate its collection and use of data.”

The addition of ByteDance to the BIS Entity List would be an important step in shielding U.S. users from the worst excesses of these applications, while preventing the further development and proliferation of these security concerns. Most notably, your department took similar action with Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (Huawei) and many of its non-U.S. affiliates in 2019.”

This step would be instrumental in applying licensing restrictions to the export of software from the U.S. to ByteDance for its applications. If American users are not able to upgrade their app with software updates, which involves the export of U.S. software, then the operability of the applications of concern will be weakened.”

Rep. Loudermilk Joins Full Georgia Delegation in Bipartisan, Bicameral Push to Expand Port of Savannah

This week, Rep. Barry Loudermilk (GA-11) joined Georgia's entire congressional delegation in a new bipartisan, bicameral push urging key Congressional committee leaders to include text authorizing a study to widen and deepen the harbor in the port of Savannah in the annual Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), which is currently being drafted. WRDA authorizes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to carry out projects relating to water supply, wastewater infrastructure, food control, navigation, and ecosystem restoration across the country.

The letter, addressed to the top Democrat and Republican on both the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works and the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, highlights the importance of the Port of Savannah to both the Georgia and the United States economy, and why the deepening and widening of the harbor would allow the port to keep pace with the continuously increasing size of container ships.

Rep. Loudermilk Cosponsors Standing Against Houthi Aggression Act

This week, Rep. Barry Loudermilk (GA-11) joined as a cosponsor to Rep. Andrew Clyde's (GA-09) legislation, H.R. 6046, the Standing Against Houthi Aggression Act. This bill redesignates the Iran-backed Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and reinstates sanctions on the group.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee advanced this legislation to the full House floor in a bipartisan vote 34-13 on February 8, 2024.

Background

  • In 2021, President Biden recklessly reversed a Trump Administration policy by removing the Houthis from the Foreign Terrorist Organization and Specially Designated Global Terrorist lists.
  • Since Hamas’ barbaric terrorist attack on Israel on October 7th, 2023, U.S. troops in the Middle East have been attacked more than 160 times by Iran-backed proxies, including the Houthis.

Prior to June 2023, the last time an official from the Inspector General's office testified before the House of Representatives was in 2018.

Senators Introduce Companion Bill to Rep. Loudermilk's Respect State Housing Laws Act

In the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act is a provision that requires landlords to provide tenants with thirty days' notice before a landlord can begin an eviction proceeding. This federal regulation was supposed to be a one-time grace period when the eviction moratorium ended; but a drafting error caused the 30-day notice requirement to remain in law permanently. This overrides state eviction notice laws, which on average, are eight days.

That's why U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Bill Hagerty (R-TN) introduced a Senate companion bill this week to Rep. Barry Loudermilk's (GA-11) legislation, H.R. 802, the Respect State Housing Laws Act to return housing policies back to the states, where they should be.
