On Tuesday, I sat down with athletes and teachers from Illinois Special Olympics. They came to the hill to share the successes of two federally supported Special Olympics programs: Unified Champion Schools and Inclusive Health. It was important to hear their stories and understand the positive impact these programs have on their lives. As a lifelong hockey player, I've learned that nothing brings people together like sports. Once our meeting concluded, I gave them all a brief lesson and let them test their skills with my office net. No meeting is complete without a game of office hockey!

2. Visited Local Elementary Schools in IL-05

On Thursday, I visited Apollo Elementary and Mark Twain Elementary to collect Valentine's Day cards the students prepared for veterans. These handmade cards are an opportunity for students to offer their appreciation for the sacrifices our veterans have made. The students shared what they hope to be when they grow up and I gave some insight into being a member of Congress! Next week, I will be handing out these cards to veterans at Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. Having delivered these cards every year, I know how important they are to our veterans.

3. Joined WCPT Radio to Discuss Government Funding

On Tuesday, I joined WCPT820 radio host Patti Vasquez to discuss various issues facing Congress. Most importantly, we talked about the upcoming government funding deadline and the need to pass a funding package in the House. As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I am particularly aware of the importance of averting a government shutdown and the devastating impacts a shutdown would have on families and our economy. 

Since September, Congress has passed two Continuing Resolutions to avoid a shutdown. While Continuing Resolutions push the deadline down the line, they fail to respond to rising costs and the growing needs of people around the country. Ultimately, a shutdown is entirely avoidable and would be utterly irresponsible. I am determined to work with my colleagues to help pass funding legislation that will improve people's lives, not worsen them.
