In this week's roundup: My vote to impeach Secretary Mayorkas, my meeting with Commandant Todd Jacobus, and my remarks on the House Floor about China. Dear Friend, In this week's roundup: My vote to impeach Secretary Mayorkas, my meeting with Commandant Todd Jacobus, and my remarks on the House Floor about China. That and more – remember to follow my Facebook page by clicking here and my Twitter page by clicking here to stay up-to-date throughout the week! MY VOTE TO IMPEACH SECRETARY MAYORKAS On Tuesday, I voted to impeach Secretary Mayorkas for his intentional failure to secure our border and protect our families. Under his watch, terrorists, drug traffickers, foreign nationals with dangerous ties to China, and millions of illegal immigrants have broken our laws and crossed our border – with no vetting at all. His dereliction of duty has proven catastrophic not only for communities along the border, but also our rural communities here at home in Iowa. Secretary Mayorkas’ unwillingness to close the border and defeat the drug cartels have left too many families mourning the death of a loved one to fentanyl and the opioid crisis. I have repeatedly called on President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas to enforce the laws on the books and restore order at our border. Those calls have fallen on deaf ears, which has reinforced my decision to impeach Secretary Mayorkas. STANDING UP TO CHINA China is the greatest threat to our economy and our country. This Congress, I’ve voted to impose sanctions on Chinese fentanyl manufacturers, ban oil sales from our Strategic Petroleum Reserve to China, and condemn China's illegal deployment of spy balloons in our airspace to surveil our military bases. I’m also glad that my bill to ban China from buying American farmland passed the House last March! WATCH MY FULL REMARKS ON CHINA BELOW! SITTING DOWN WITH COMMANDANT TODD JACOBUS On Wednesday, I had a productive conversation with Commandant Todd Jacobus of the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs and the Iowa Veterans Home. I will always vote to ensure that our veterans receive the high-quality healthcare and benefits that they deserve and have earned. PRESIDENT BIDEN'S WASTEFUL SPENDING POLICIES CONTINUE TO FAIL AMERICAN FAMILIES AND WORKERS The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released its 10-year outlook the other day and the findings are alarming. Our federal deficit will top $1.6 trillion this year and grow to $2.6 trillion over the next decade. Federal debt will also rise from 99% of GDP to 116% and our interest payments on our debt this year will be more than we spend on defense and Medicare combined. Additionally, according to recent polls, 64% of Americans report living paycheck to paycheck and 24% have no money in the bank at all. I opposed President Biden's reckless spending every step of the way because I knew that prices would spike for American families and our fiscal health would deteriorate. Bidenomics just doesn't work. Six in 10 live 'paycheck to paycheck,' 24% have $0 in bank Despite records being broken on Wall Street, those on Main Street live and work for the next paycheck and have little saved for an emergency. We talked about our combined work to pass a strong Farm Bill, overturn California’s costly Prop 12 mandates, and rein in the EPA’s excessive power when it comes to WOTUS. CATCHING UP WITH THE IOWA ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES On Tuesday, I met with the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. We discussed how the delayed rollout of FAFSA is negatively impacting students and how we can work together to support student success. MY TAX AND TRADE LEGISLATIVE ASSISTANT MEETING WITH AMERICA'S VETDOGS This week, my Tax and Trade Legislative Assistant — Connor — met Gunner. Gunner is part of America’s VetDogs, which has served over 1,000 veterans since its creation in 2008. Our veterans are heroes, and I will always work to ensure that they have the support they deserve. MY AGRICULTURE LEGISLATIVE ASSISTANT MEETING WITH DUCKS UNLIMITED I’m glad that my Agriculture Legislative Assistant — Josh — could meet with folks from Ducks Unlimited this week to talk about the Farm Bill. I'm working to strengthen crop insurance, open new export markets for Iowa agriculture, support Iowa biofuels, and ban China from buying American farmland. MEETING WITH FOLKS FROM COUNCIL BLUFFS I enjoyed sitting down with Margaret, Devon, and Cristin — who live in Council Bluffs — as part of the 12th annual Debbie’s Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer advocacy day. We must find a cure to this awful disease that has impacted too many families in Iowa and nationwide. SIGNING ONTO A LETTER URGING PRESIDENT BIDEN TO OVERTURN HIS BAN ON EXPORTS OF AMERICAN NATURAL GAS President Biden's decision to stop exports of American natural gas will strengthen China and weaken our economy. We must support American energy production — not inhibit it. I'm glad to sign this letter to urge the Biden administration to overturn this move. More than 150 Republicans take aim at Biden's moratorium ... FIRST ON FOX: A large coalition of House Republicans, including leadership, are calling on President Biden to reverse his actions pausing permits for natural gas exports. Bill was a champion for Iowa agriculture, our business community, and our farm families. He will be missed by so many who knew and loved him. MY WEEKLY COLUMN: MY WORK TO PROTECT OUR COUNTRY FROM CHINA China poses the greatest threat to America’s economic and national security. Chinese spy balloons have unlawfully infiltrated our sovereign airspace to spy on our military bases, Chinese fentanyl manufacturers have shipped tens of thousands of pounds of fentanyl to Mexico which then flows over our open border, Chinese politicians have intentionally stonewalled investigations into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Chinese spies collect private, technological, and commercial data that costs the American economy billions of dollars and leaves our families vulnerable to identity fraud and other crimes. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Chinese purchases of American farmland also increased tenfold between 2009 and 2016 alone, underscoring the urgent need to defend our farmland from our foreign adversaries. Given the many threats our nation faces, we must combat Chinese aggression with brute American strength. Read more in my weekly column about my work to protect our country from China below!
