Friend,

While our community grapples with confusion, fear and misinformation surrounding the coronavirus, Alyse is doing her part to try to get Alaskans answers by hosting three virtual town halls with experts in recent weeks.

We’ve been hearing that folks had questions about CDC guidelines, so Alyse brought in the medical director of the Emergency Department at our state’s largest hospital. With the school closures we’ve been hearing from parents asking about how to communicate with their kids about this pandemic, so Alyse brought on a childhood expert and counselor.

We’ve been joined by Dr. Daniel Safranek, the medical director for Providence's emergency department; Shirley Pitz, a childhood development expert; and Jared Kosin, the Alaska State Hospital and Nursing Home Association president.

We are trying to help everyday Alaskans ask experts their questions - whether the topic is their health, their pocketbook, or their children's education. Alaskans deserve accessible information from the experts.

Here’s just some of of the advice from Daniel, Shirley and Jared:

*Social distancing means limiting large groups of people coming together, closing buildings and canceling events.

*Avoid the emergency room unless you need immediate help and treatment.

*Don’t let a lack of health insurance prevent you from seeking treatment. Hospitals around the state have programs in place to cover the costs.

*When talking with children about the pandemic, ask what they’ve been hearing and feeling anxiety about, keep information simple and focus on the everyday steps your family can take to stay safe. Remember that your kids feel your anxiety along with you.

*It is safe and healthy to go outdoors and get fresh air, but maintain 6 feet of distance from anyone outside of your household.

*When you’re home with your kids, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Shirley used this example: You have to put on your oxygen mask before you’re able to help others.

*If your family is healthy and safe, make a meal for a senior neighbor or relative. Your kids can write notes and draw pictures for them too.

This crisis is bigger than any campaign, but Alyse is using her platform to meet people where they are and talk about what’s on their mind during these difficult times.

Thanks,

Team Alyse
