The fight for fair maps in Louisiana has been a roller coaster ride lately, and some hard-fought victories are now under attack. 

Following the Supreme Court’s historic affirmance of the Voting Rights Act in the case Allen v. Milligan, fair maps allies were permitted to continue to fight against similarly discriminatory maps in Louisiana. A LOT has happened since then, so here’s a quick rundown: 

FIRST: First, fair maps advocates challenged Louisiana's discriminatory congressional map – and won! The court tossed out the map for violating Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. 

THEN: The Louisiana legislature answered our call to create two Black opportunity districts in the state – a historic win for equal representation. 

NOW: Anti-democratic forces who remain set on reversing this progress filed a baseless lawsuit attempting to get rid of the new Black opportunity district.

Advocates for fair maps have already sprung into action to intervene in this case, pointing to the precedent set in last summer’s Supreme Court decision — and it’s on us to get their backs to ensure both Black opportunity districts remain intact.

Anti-democratic factions are arrogantly assuming they can get away with bringing back discriminatory maps in Louisiana, because they’ve gotten away with it for years — they think our movement will be satisfied with the progress we’ve made in southern states. They’re wrong.

This latest attack is a direct attempt to weaken the Voting Rights Act and silence the voices of Black voters in Louisiana who have been denied the right to equal representation for decades. We won’t stand for it. 

The Supreme Court and the Louisiana legislature have already made it clear that they’ve had enough with this anti-democratic behavior from rigged map architects. Now we need to make our voices heard that fair maps must be protected.
