Growth in the nation’s most populous state has slowed in the 21st century; recently, population declines have occurred around the state, with 47 of 58 counties losing residents.

Almost a quarter of the nation’s immigrants live in California. About half of California’s immigrants are from Latin America, but a majority of recent arrivals come from Asia.

Eighty percent of California college students attend a public institution, with over half at a community college. About 7% of the state budget goes to higher education and financial aid.
