Lt. Gov. Rodriguez Invites Wisconsin Schools to Apply for National Lt. Governors’ STEM Education Scholarship Program |
Lieutenant governor encourages pre-K through 12th grade public, private, and Tribal schools to apply for up to $1,000 to support STEM-related activities for students |
MADISON — Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez today announced that the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) has opened the application period for the annual Lt. Governors’ Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Scholarship Program, which awards up to $1,000 to 12 schools nationally to support STEM-related activities for youth. Applications will be accepted until March 15, 2024, with award recipients announced in Spring 2024.
“Advancing and supporting critical STEM education opportunities for students to hone their skills and find their passion for this ever-changing, ever-important field is essential for their success in the 21st-century workforce,” said Lt. Gov. Rodriguez. “Gov. Evers and I will continue to make sure all Wisconsinites are encouraged, welcomed, and supported in STEM programs and the tech industry.”
NLGA will award 12 scholarships worth $10,000 total to 12 schools in 12 different states and territories. The Scholarship Program is administered by NLGA, the nonpartisan, nonprofit association for the nation’s lieutenant governors, and sponsored by ACT, the education and career readiness nonprofit.
In September, Lt. Gov. Rodriguez announced Beaver Dam Middle School had been awarded $500 to support STEM programming as part of last year’s cohort of program recipients. Beaver Dam received funding to support extension activities for the Coding Club, allowing students the opportunity to participate in lessons that apply coding to high-interest areas, such as building codable robots and drones and coding through music.
“ACT is proud to once again sponsor this program,” said ACT CEO Janet Godwin. “ACT data shows that the current state of STEM readiness is cause for serious concern. ACT is uniquely poised to meet this moment, and working alongside NLGA, we are committed to ensuring that all students leave high school prepared to enter a world of evolving postsecondary and work opportunities, including through access to a high-quality STEM education.”
All public, private, and Tribal schools in the 50 states and five U.S. territories are invited to apply at nlga.awardsplatform.com. Funding will be awarded to schools to support STEM-related activities, programming, curriculum, equipment, and other expenses.
“The need for increased educational opportunities in STEM is nonpartisan and an area of consensus for the nation’s lieutenant governors,” said NLGA Executive Director Julia Brossart. “NLGA has adopted STEM Education as a pillar of work for the association on behalf of members, who know the importance of educating students in STEM to prepare for the jobs of tomorrow.”
Applications will be reviewed in Spring 2024, with award winners announced at the NLGA Spring Meeting in late April 2024. Additional information on the STEM Scholarship Program, including instructions for applying, can be found here.
