John,
Far too many people in every corner of our state are struggling to afford their lives due to the outrageously high cost of insulin, a life-saving drug used to treat diabetes.
We know this problem is not an illusion. The price of insulin went up by over 1,100% between 1990 and 2020. We also know some of the main reasons why: Drug markets are heavily concentrated. Pharmaceutical companies abuse and exploit drug patents. And an abject lack of price transparency pervades the entire industry.
In 2018, the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office intervened and sued three insulin manufacturers, alleging they deceptively priced their insulin products, requiring uninsured and underinsured Minnesotans to pay astronomically high out-of-pocket costs based on the list price of the drugs.
Today, I’m proud to announce that our office has reached a landmark settlement resolving the litigation against insulin manufacturer Eli Lilly that guarantees all Minnesotans, with or without insurance, can buy Eli Lilly’s insulin products for $35 per month for the next five years – starting today.
This settlement ensures that insulin will be accessible and affordable to every Minnesotan who needs it and is a huge victory for all of the advocates and activists who’ve fought for years, far too often through tragedy, for this outcome.
As the People’s Lawyer, I will always have your back and fight to hold Big Pharma accountable. But I can’t do it alone.
John, will you donate $10, $25, $50, or whatever works for you today so we can continue working together to help people afford their lives and live with dignity, safety, and respect?
Thank you,
Keith Ellison
