Republicans in the Missouri Senate just blocked amendments to legalize abortion in cases of rape or incest.
This is truly despicable, and flies in the face of basic decency, not to mention what the overwhelming majority of people in Missouri (and across the country) think is right. |
Let’s be clear what we are talking about here: Missouri has one of the strictest abortion bans in the entire country. In 2019, Missouri passed a law banning all abortions, even in cases of rape or incest and no matter the age of the patient. That law was shepherded through the legislature by Sen. Andrew Koenig, a key leader of the Chaos Caucus, and the person who I am running to replace in the Senate.
Missouri’s abortion law forces victims who have already gone through trauma to experience more of it—this time at the hands of the government. The Republicans who support total bans without exceptions for rape or incest seem more interested in scoring right-wing political points than in protecting lives.
When Democrats in the Senate brought up some gut-wrenching scenarios that highlight the need for exceptions to the law, such as girls as young as 9 being forced to give birth, their Republicans colleagues were unmoved. “God is perfect,” said Sen. Sandy Crawford. “God does not make mistakes. And for some reason he allows that to happen. Bad things happen.”
God may be perfect, but humans are not. And like it or not, we must make laws grounded in reality, common sense, and consensus—not any individual’s personal version of morality.
This is what’s at stake in our election: whether we will govern with compassion and decency…or whether cruelty and chaos is all that we can expect.
We can change all of this. We can do so much better—and this November, we have a chance to stop the extremists. That’s why I am asking for your support to flip this seat: together, we can break the supermajority that allows Missouri Republicans to pass laws that are both unpopular and unjust.
