Dominic's Constituency Newsletter
John xxxxxx,
Since my last update, I have launched Esher and Walton's Apprentice of the Year for the third year running to celebrate all the brilliant apprentices we have across our local area. You can find out more, and nominate an apprentice, below.

Elsewhere in the constituency, Elmbridge Borough Council is covering up a critical audit from 2020 when health and safety concerns at community centres were first raised. More on this, and my latest letter to the council, can be found below.

In Westminster, I welcomed pupils from Chandlers Field School to Parliament for a Q&A. In the Chamber, I asked the Minister for a constituency breakdown of the number of people affected by the Post Office Scandal to help MPs make themselves available to those affected.

As ever, if you are a constituent in need of my assistance, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Best wishes,

Dominic

Congratulating last year's winner, Ryan Scott from Creative Nature

To mark National Apprenticeship Week 2024, I am launching Esher and Walton’s Apprentice of the Year for the third year running.

Last year’s winner was Ryan Scott from Creative Nature in West Molesey. Ryan is doing some great work helping the company to grow with a drive to learn and climb the ladder within the business. He also works alongside the founder, Julianne Ponan, to speak at events to promote apprenticeships.

Since 2010, 4,830 new apprenticeships have been created in Esher and Walton as part of our drive to improve skills and productivity in our economy. I want to celebrate all the brilliant apprentices across Esher and Walton constituency who are rising stars in their businesses and sectors.

Please fill in the form to nominate an apprentice below. Of course, businesses should feel free to nominate more than one apprentice. The competition is open to any apprentices either living or working in Esher and Walton constituency.

The deadline to enter is 12pm on Monday 26th February 2024.

Nominate an apprentice at the link below.

Crisis in our Community Centres - Elmbridge Borough Council Covering Up Critical Audit
Visiting users at Hersham Centre for the Community after it reopened one day a week in January 2024
Further to my letter to Elmbridge Borough Council last week asking that the June 2020 audit regarding community centres be released, I have now received a response from the Leader of the Council refusing to release this report. This report was the first time concerns surrounding community centres were brought to officers and councillors, so it is vital to understanding exactly what the issues resulting in the closures were, and how long they had been going on for.

I have now submitted a formal freedom of information request to Elmbridge Borough Council asking that this audit be made publicly available immediately to allay the concerns of residents that the crisis engulfing our community centres is being compounded by the concealment of that critical report.

You can read my reply to the Council at the link below.

£7,731 Government Funding for New Goalposts at Claygate Royals, Esher FC and Molesey Juniors
** ([link removed])

This Conservative Government has set out a clear plan to get 3.5 million people across the country active by 2030, including one million young people. It is important that people of all ages have access to high-quality sports facilities to stay active and healthy. Further to this, sports facilities play an important role in our local communities.

This is why the Government has announced that more than 1,100 grassroots sports projects will benefit from £93 million of funding, with Esher and Walton constituency set to receive £7,731 in funding for new goal posts at Claygate Royals, Esher FC and Molesey Juniors.

This is great news for three fantastic local clubs, and I look forward to seeing how this Government investment will improve football facilities in our communities.

Supporting Georgia Stephens' Campaign to Improve Road Safety on Molesey Road

Meeting with Georgia and her parents to hear what improvements they would like to see on Molesey Road

I recently met with 10-year-old Georgia Stephens and her parents on Molesey Road to hear about the petition Georgia has made calling for road safety improvements on Molesey Road. Georgia, like many of her peers, walks to school along Molesey Road and is concerned about speeding cars and the lack of a safe crossing point. I will be following up with Surrey County Council to explain Georgia’s concerns, and ask that officers attend Molesey Road for a site visit to see what can be done to help keep young people like Georgia safe as they walk to and from school.

Almost 500 people have already signed Georgia’s petition - you can add your name at the link below.

Litter Picking in St John's, Walton
** ([link removed])
I was recently down in St John’s in Walton to help clean up the green on St John’s Drive. I know there has been an ongoing issue with litter in this area, so I have been in contact with PA Housing to ensure they keep on top of emptying the bins and clearing up the area.

Whilst the green is looking clearer than it has in the past, there is still more we can do to keep our green spaces clean and tidy. I will be following up with PA Housing to ensure they continue to empty the bins on a regular basis, but please also make sure to put your rubbish in available bins or take it home for recycling.

Meeting Chandlers Field School Pupil Parliament in the House of Commons
** ([link removed])

It was great to catch up with Chandlers Field School Pupil Parliament for a Q&A following their tour of the House of Commons.

The pupils asked some really thoughtful questions, from how Parliament works to where MPs eat their lunch!

Thank you to the pupils and their teachers for coming up to Westminster.
Righting the Wrongs of the Post Office Scandal

Speaking in Backbench Business debate on management culture of the Post Office
MPs from all sides of the House have been contacted by local residents who have been affected by the Post Office scandal. To best help those who may not be getting in touch directly with their local MP - and may be suffering in silence - I asked the Minister for a constituency breakdown of the number of people affected by the scandal. This would help MPs make themselves available to those affected by one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in our nation’s history.
