In our country, every single day, 120 people are shot and killed. Two hundred more are shot and wounded. We can’t even measure how many others are traumatized by this violence.

Think about what that means today, right now. Think about how many more Americans will suffer from gun violence today, tomorrow, and this week.

President Biden and Vice President Harris have taken historic action on this issue, including passing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. But we know that’s not enough.

President Biden has long called on Congressional Republicans to join Democrats in passing an assault weapons ban.

Despite what Republicans and the NRA say, gun control legislation works.

Take the Biden-Harris Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. The bill was the first federal gun control legislation enacted in 28 years – and already it’s saving lives.

Thanks to the new law, we have stronger background checks, fiercer prosecution of firearm traffickers and unlicensed gun sellers, and greater funding for mental health services for children and schools.

A ban on assault weapons would have a similarly far-reaching impact. We know that because, in the years following the 1994 assault weapons ban, deaths from mass shootings fell.

Congress let the ban expire in 2004, and since then, mass shootings have continued to increase at an alarming rate.

President Biden and Vice President Harris are right. It’s time for Congressional Republicans to back an assault weapons and high-capacity magazines ban, as well as require background checks for all gun sales. These measures would save lives, and it’s time to act.
