Last chance! Have your say on Oldham’s budget plans

With only a few hours to go until our budget consultation for 2024/25 closes, we want to hear your views on how we can best spend and save money as a council.

The consultation closes at midnight tonight, so you still have plenty of time to submit your opinions – don’t waste this opportunity.

A final decision on budget proposals will then take place at a council meeting on Wednesday 28 February, following detailed consideration of the ideas that were put forward.

Vast majority of food businesses in Oldham rated ‘good’ or ‘very good’ for cleanliness

In the last 12 months, 87 per cent of the food businesses inspected by Oldham Council were rated 4 or 5 (out of 5) for their hygiene. This means their businesses are either ‘good’ or ‘very good’.

For a business to be satisfactory, business owners must achieve a rating of 3 with council officers regularly providing help and advice to those who need to improve – and further action taken against businesses who are potentially putting people at risk.

Illuminate countdown is on

Join us in our annual celebration of light event, as Illuminate returns this month.

The event opens on Saturday 24 February from 6pm, with a magical Illuminate Parade taking place from Oldham Civic Centre to the Old Town Hall.

Our magical event then continues into the night with a range of inspiring light art installations and performances across the town centre for you to discover.

On Sunday 25 February we will also be hosting ‘By the Light of the Moon’, from 5.30 to 8pm, with an exciting free family event that celebrates the magical world of Moths at Northern Roots, located just near Alexandra Park.

Meet the moonlight pollinators in our magical forest, help the moths carry out their nocturnal work and join the Moonlight Moth Ball too!

Check out a new Gallery Oldham exhibition

A compelling new exhibition titled ‘In Which Language Do We Dream?’ is opening at Gallery Oldham, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of one Syrian family uprooted by war.

Through intimate photographs and film, the exhibition provides an emotional look at the journey of the al-Hindawi family, who fled their home in Homs, Syria in 2012 due to the ongoing civil war.

The exhibition runs from tomorrow until 11 May and is suitable for all ages. For more information on this, please visit Gallery Oldham.

Digital Saturdays at Oldham Libraries

Digital arts charity Peshkar are offering free workshops for 7-11 year olds across Oldham Libraries and invite you to get involved.

Workshops will be held throughout February and March at Uppermill, Limehurst and Crompton Libraries and cover a range of art forms such as theatre, photography and soundscaping.

Young people and their parents/carers are welcome to attend as many workshops as they like and the work created will be showcased and celebrated at the ‘Oldham Digital Festival’ on Saturday 16 March 2024 at Oldham Library.

Upcoming changes to Ascroft Street

The redevelopment of Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre is well underway and, as you may have seen, the steel structure is now starting to take shape.

As part of these ongoing works, contractors need to install a new connection onto an existing United Utilities pipeline within Ascroft Street, meaning this will be closed from Monday 19 February to Monday 15 April, along with Clegg Street (from its junction with Firth Street).

A diversion will be in place to take vehicles and pedestrians across Firth Street, up Greaves Street and around towards St Mary’s Way.
