Legislative Update
Legislative Session begins next week and I am looking forward to getting back to St. Paul to serve the great people of District 5A. Given the February start date, this year?s session will likely go by just as quickly as last year which means we need to be prepared to hit the ground running. I am so thankful for the time I have had this interim to connect with so many people and groups throughout our district to hear their concerns & priorities for this year?s session. Thank you!
We have some important legislative priorities that need to be top of mind next week. The first thing we need to address is a fix to last year?s School Resource Officer (SRO) bill. The Governor has already stated his intent to get a bill passed early in the session and House Republicans intend to hold him to his word. Schools across the state have had to remove their SROs because of this legislation and it is imperative that we undo this change for the safety of our schools. We need a truly bi-partisan solution here given how badly this was fumbled under single-party control.
With total control of state government, Democrats are already rushing to push through their assisted suicide bill, committee hearings started two weeks ago. As a proud pro-life legislator, I will be opposing this legislation. I believe we have systems in place to assist us with end-of-life care, hospice. Instead, as more of our baby boomer population ages, I believe we should be working to improve this form of palliative care while also supporting our nursing home facilities.
Other legislation that will most likely be addressed this session include a recently dropped bill to make Minnesota a sanctuary state for illegals. I will adamantly oppose this legislation because I believe our number one priority should be ensuring the needs & concerns of Minnesotans are met, not enabling the destruction of our sovereignty.??
Though I have not seen legislation yet, there is a belief that the Governor may try to push through more gas tax legislation in the name of Clean Transportation Standards.? One thing to note with this proposal is that this additional $.39-$.46 will not be used for creating or improving infrastructure like our current gas tax. If this legislation comes to the House Floor, I will most certainly be opposing it.
I am proud to say that during the interim, I have been working on writing legislation brought to me by constituents. Some of them include: A bill to increase the penalty for exposing a child or vulnerable adult to fentanyl; A bill to increase property tax exemption for disabled Veterans; A bill to provide funding for our schools that have been mandated to change their mascots due to Native American themes; and, A bill to correct a mandate of pay that is well above our school district averages for paraprofessionals that substitute teach.? All of these bills will be introduced on Monday.?
I will be in St. Paul fighting for the future of Minnesota. "Our great state is worth fighting for" - this statement holds true now more than ever. We need to bring balance back to the Minnesota legislature and ensure that everyone in our great state is heard in the legislative process. I will proudly serve on the Education Finance & Education Policy Committees again this year. Also, I was recently appointed to the Legislative Task Force on Child Protection. Fighting for our children is the ultimate privilege for me!
One group that I?ve met with over the interim is Team Humanity [ [link removed] ]. They are a non-partisan support group for those who have been injured by vaccines as well as their family and friends. They share their stories and advocate for change in policy to prevent injuries for more people in the future. I hope I will be able to give them a voice at the capitol to share their story. As always, thank you for allowing me to be your representative in St. Paul. It is truly an honor to be able to fight for Our Way of Life!
