NCRC Statement On Bank Lobbyist Lawsuit To Block Community Reinvestment Act Rules
By NCRC
"The banking industry is showing its true colors. Out of one side of their mouth they say higher capital requirements will hurt people of color and low-income people, but then out of the other they attack the nation’s preeminent law requiring them to lend to those same people. Nobody should believe them when they say they care about lending to working-class people and people of color. On top of this, they’re fighting to dismantle the CFPB, and they’ve even asked the courts to let them out of such mild irritations as ‘tell us who you do and don’t lend money to for small business activity.’" [Read More ([link removed] ) ]

A Strong Black Economy Still Mired In Inequality: Race, Jobs And The Economy Update For January 2024
By Joseph Dean and Dedrick Asante-Muhammad, NCRC
African Americans continue to see greater gains in wages, employment and wealth than at any point in recent history. While the labor market appears strong – with unemployment rates below the 4% threshold defined as “full employment” for the past two years – many workers still report that rent and other high-cost items make it difficult to build wealth. This strong labor market has shrunk the historic racial disparities in topline jobless rates. The African American unemployment rate is now roughly 1.5 times that of Whites, down from a long-term trend of roughly doubling the White unemployment rate. [Read More ([link removed] ) ]
Study Finds Socioeconomic Conditions - Not Genetics Or Lifestyle Choices - Account For Racial Life Expectancy Gap
By Magdalena Mysliwiec and Devin Thompson, NCRC
The difference in rates of premature death between racial groups can be completely explained by socioeconomic factors, a new study from Tulane University found. Researchers found tight connections between early death and material deprivation. Lifespan gaps by race were driven by differences in employment, family income, food insecurity, education, access to healthcare, health insurance, housing instability and relationship status, the study found. Gentrification Increases Risk Of Tick-Borne Disease For Communities Of Colour
By Jessica Watts & Kishana Taylor, Nature Microbiology
Gentrification consists of neighborhood developments that usually result in economic and, in most cases, demographic changes that mainly displace socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals and people of color who reside in historically disinvested areas. According to a study conducted from 2000 to 2013, more than 110,000 Black residents and 24,000 Hispanic residents were
displaced from gentrifying US neighborhoods. [Read More ([link removed] ) ]
