NORTHVILLIANS,

This past Friday and Saturday night we witnessed the last two races at Northville Downs, bringing to mind all that the Carlo Family has done for the town these past 80 years. As I attended the races, it brought back memories of when I parked cars there in the 70’s. I feel fortunate in my time to not only have seen the horsemen at the Downs, but to have witnessed Detroit’s famous athletes performing at other historic arenas such as Olympia (Red Wings), Cobo (Pistons), and Briggs Stadium (Lions & Tigers).

Today I will talk about local volunteers in our community who share their unique time and talents, just like those athletes who made their mark over the years. We celebrated their accomplishments tonight at the Northville Community Awards Event.

Before learning more about these local volunteers, let's see what's happening TODAY ...

In honor of  those who share their time & talents, let's take a closer look at the history of the Chamber's Award Ceremony ... and this year's recipients:

Since 1976, the Northville Chamber of Commerce celebrates the dedication and commitment of community members who give their time and energy to making Northville a special place to live, work and play. One citizen is recognized with the Citizen of the Year award. In 2014, this award was designated the “John Genitti Citizen of the Year Award”, in honor of local resident and businessman John Genitti. Previously, it was named after our first Mayor of the City, Claude Ely.

Additional volunteer awards presented tonight:

  • Greg Presley has served more than 30 years on Northville’s Downtown Development Authority, using his architectural experience to preserve and update historical buildings.
  • Greg has served Northville on the Planning Commission, Historical Society Board, Chamber, and we can see the results of his contributions in Mill Race, the Ford Plant, Town Square, the City Walkway, Tipping Point Theatre, & the Victorian Festival, just to name a few.

  • As the supervisor at Maybury State Park, she partnered with others to add a new playground and headquarters, and increased use of the park. She has recently retired from that position but promises to stay involved.
Northvillians, I challenge you to get involved, just as those we recognized at the Awards Banquet did.  And your timing would be ideal … there are two new Task forces launching next month: Our Bicentennial TEAM, who will make plans for our town’s 200-year celebration and our Cemeterian TEAM, who will work to upgrade the look and aesthetics of our historic cemeteries which have Revolutionary, Civil War, and veterans from all conflicts since the 1700’s. Get involved today and we will move forward...Together!

Keep that Northville Sharing Faith!
