REPORT: Three Quarters of Young People Experienced Harassment in Online Gaming in 2023

When players pick up their phones or sit down at their PC or console to play online games, they now expect to experience hate — antisemitism, racism, misogyny, homophobia and more — on a regular basis.

An estimated 83 million online multiplayer gamers in the U.S. were exposed to hate and harassment over the last six months, including three out of four young gamers, according to

a new report from the ADL Center for Technology and Society.

70 percent of Jewish adults experienced harassment in online multiplayer games, though this report’s data was collected before the Oct. 7 terrorist attack in Israel. We will be gathering more data on this. Holocaust denial in 2023 occurred at levels similar to previous years, with around one in ten gamers being exposed to this form of antisemitism in online multiplayer games.

“Harassment in online games is still so pervasive that it is the norm today. This is a reality we cannot accept, especially when young and vulnerable people are increasingly targeted, and when we know that what happens online can have dramatic consequences offline,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO.

The report includes detailed ADL recommendations for the gaming industry, government, civil society, caregivers and educators to address online hate and harassment.

Rejecting Deicide Claims: During Christmas last year, there was a concerted effort by some Palestinian factions and their supporters to gaslight public opinion into believing the current Israel-Hamas war is in fact a Jewish-Christian issue, writes ADL SVP of International Affairs Marina Rosenberg. In the Arab press and across social media, there were invocations of the age-old antisemitic trope of deicide — the accusation that Jews killed Jesus — by depicting baby Jesus being targeted by the Israeli army. It was particularly ironic to see that Israel’s detractors attack the Jewish state, which is the only country in the Middle East where the population of the Christian
community has remained relatively stable.

Take Action Today

Make your voice heard! Call for Congress to pass the Senate Emergency National Security Funding Bill, which was introduced this week. This bipartisan bill provides funds for the challenges facing the Jewish community: funding to help our ally Israel defend itself to ensure that the horrors of October 7 never happen again, and a historic increase for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program. Improving safety and security for Jewish communities is a pillar of the ADL-backed National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism since NSGP provides grants to nonprofits such as synagogues that can be used to install security cameras, reinforce steel doors and learn how to prepare for emergencies. There
currently aren’t enough funds to help protect every community from the threat of extremist violence. ADL has been the leading organization calling for NSGP funding.

As a @NorthwesternU alum, I find this reprehensible. We know that university leadership likely would not stand idly by when other countries are delegitimized; so why, when anti-Jewish hate is rising, is it ok when the target is the Jewish state?
