Fellow Conservative,
No one likes a backseat driver. Especially when that backseat driver is a federally mandated monitoring technology. But that is exactly what the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is looking to implement.
When Congress passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in 2021 they included a requirement that NHTSA develop regulations and standards to mandate that all new cars:
- Passively detect intoxication levels and disable the car, and;
- Passively detect and monitor “impaired” driving — monitoring you constantly, likely with cameras, sensors, and AI technology.
This technology restricts our agency as an Americans and and our presumption of innocence. While every death due to drunk driving is a completely avoidable tragedy, the government is a sledgehammer, not a precision instrument. It will do more harm than good.
