John,
Last week kicked off the start of Black History Month, and as the Virginia legislative session is in full swing, we are taking the time to celebrate how far Virginia’s Legislative Black Caucus has come.
In 1968, there was only one Black person in the Virginia Assembly — William Ferguson Reid. Today, there are 32. 🎉
In fact, this year the Virginia General Assembly kicked off with its youngest and most diverse class in history — many of whom are Sister District alums: Jennifer Carroll Foy, Alex Askew, Debra Gardner, Briana Sewell, Lashrecse Aird, Michael Feggans, and Joshua Cole.
Candidates of color face disproportionate barriers to running for office, from fundraising to media attention to political networks. That’s why we are so proud to have endorsed more than 60 candidates of color since our inception.
John, Virginia proves that Black legislators will get elected if we do our part to support them. If you understand the importance of investing in candidates of color, please contribute $20.24 to help us continue this work.

While we’re happy to celebrate the long-overdue progress the Legislative Black Caucus has made in the Virginia Assembly, we continue to recognize that our country still has a long way to go before state legislatures truly reflect the diversity of their communities.
That’s why we will continue to support Black leaders and amplify Black voices, and keep building on the progress we’ve made — not just in February but all year round.
Thank you for standing with us.
In solidarity,
— Sister District
