Dear John,
I love this clip of our
2024 Annual Dinner speaker,
Babylon Bee
CEO Seth Dillon
, speaking about
the power of bad ideas in our culture
:
If you can't watch the video right now, Dillon says that "There is so much pressure on people to be compassionate and tolerant, to the point where they tolerate things that a sane and just society should never tolerate...We need to draw hard lines in the sand and say we're not going to accept that...
It's a moral imperative to mock and ridicule bad ideas...to deal with them before they manifest their bad effects in society
. Another way of putting it is that satire is a scalpel that you would use to cut out social cancers. So you're cutting, but for the purpose of healing, you're not cutting for the purpose of wounding."
The necessity of this "godly laughter" that Dillon is talking about inspired me to choose the famous words of Psalm 2:1-6 for our theme this year. "Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?...He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision." In short,
Rulers rage, God laughs.
This is a truth that we in Minnesota must affirm, now more than ever!
We know this event will be funny and - even better - full of hope!
