John, this Black History Month I’m reflecting on the leaders who came before me, paved the path for progress.

Iconic civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lewis. People in my own family like my grandfather Harold, who was heavily involved in his community. All my aunts and uncles who grew up proudly displaying their gay, nonbinary, and transgender identities…. They all inspired me to become a trailblazer of my own.

I’m proud to follow in the footsteps of such amazing Black leaders – and I am a direct result of the trail they blazed.

Here in Maryland, I was the first Black mayor of Hagerstown. Now, I’m defying the odds every day as a candidate for Congress.

But if I’m going to continue making history, I need to know that you’re with me, John. I didn’t get here alone, and I can’t move forward alone – but there is so much more trail for us to blaze.
