John — 31 years ago, our country took a major step toward ensuring that workers could take time off for an illness or to care for a loved one without the fear of losing their job.
But despite the passage of the Family and Medical Leave Act, millions of workers didn’t qualify — including workers in hospitals, medical facilities, and restaurants.
In fact, 76% of employees in the private sector today don’t have access to paid family leave.
81% of people working in the food service industry, and 75% of childcare center workers DO NOT HAVE ACCESS to paid sick days.
The United States is one of only a few nations that do not guarantee paid leave. (In Estonia, they provide a year and a half of paid leave to new parents.)
No one should be forced to go to work sick or leave an ill family member at home for fear of missing a paycheck.
It’s time for Congress to enact paid family and medical leave for ALL. If you agree, add your name as a citizen cosponsor of the Family and Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act today.
Part of our work to build a more just, loving nation is to end the agony that too many people in America feel every day from facing these decisions.
Your voice is powerful. I hope you will join me in using it.
With love and gratitude,
Cory
