Those with drug-resistant forms of the disease must also endure harsh and bitter first-line antibiotics and months of painful injections that can cause nausea, hearing loss, and even psychosis—with no guarantee that they’ll ever be cured.

More than 1.5 million people died from tuberculosis in 2018 alone, and now the coronavirus pandemic has put TB patients at an even greater risk.

During pandemics like the one we’re facing now, people with preexisting health conditions and suppressed immune systems are often at the highest risk. Doctors Without Borders is on the ground in 24 countries caring for people with TB—and as the coronavirus outbreak continues to spread, the need for urgent medical aid will only continue to grow.
