Permanently expanding the child tax credit would increase kids’ lifetime earnings and education
Last week, the US House of Representatives approved a tax deal that included a short-term expansion of the child tax credit (CTC). Though it’s still pending Senate approval, passage of the bill would greatly help families, especially those with moderate to low incomes.
Typically, discussions around the CTC focus on short-term benefits: reducing child poverty, food insecurity, and material hardship. But new Urban research on a larger expansion of the CTC finds long-term benefits as well. A permanently expanded credit, in line with what was included in the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act, would boost high school and college graduation among recipients and their adulthood earnings by as much as 17 percent.
