Hi JOHN,

February is Black History Month, and I’m proud to stand with Black Rhode Islanders as we celebrate their achievements in the face of historic and ongoing discrimination.

African Americans have made innumerable contributions to our state. Black Rhode Islanders formed the 1st Rhode Island Regiment to help our nation win its independence during the Revolutionary War and have continued to serve in our armed forces at a disproportionately high rate. Rhode Island’s history, economy and culture have been shaped by African Americans; their stories and triumphs are central to our state and nation’s identity.

We still have a long way to go in the pursuit of equity and equal opportunity. From mass incarceration to gun violence, Black Rhode Islanders are faced with institutional obstacles. As we celebrate this important month, we must remain cognizant of the work we have yet to accomplish. I hope you’ll join me in taking a few minutes to contemplate how racial prejudice has played a role in your community as we recognize and celebrate our Black friends and neighbors.
