The U.S. Coronavirus Response Must Meet Health Workers' Child Care Needs

As COVID-19 continues to spread throughout the United States, the key strategy of the public health response is to slow its transmission as much as possible so that the health care system—including workers—is not overwhelmed.

This column presents new data suggesting that a large segment of the U.S. health care workforce comprises parents of children too young to remain home alone unattended. <[link removed]>

As schools and child care programs across the country close to comply with social distancing requirements, these health workers will likely find themselves without reliable child care, which will impede their ability to perform their critical work.

To ensure that health providers with young children can do their jobs now and in future crises, child care must be part of emergency planning.

Congress: Extend Paid Leave Protections to All Workers in the Next Coronavirus Response Bill

As the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic causes significant economic fallout, policymakers must pass swift and expansive interventions to help workers access paid leave to recover and care for family members.

When enacted, phase three of Congress' coronavirus response stimulus package should expand access to leave by including passage of the Providing Americans Insured Days of Leave Act (PAID Leave Act) <[link removed]> in order to ensure that all workers have access to the supports that they need to safeguard public health while also protecting families' economic security.
