John – I, like millions of women out there, had a difficult pregnancy when I was carrying my son.

On a bitterly cold January afternoon in 2019, I started experiencing extreme pain alongside other complication symptoms. I knew something was very wrong. So, I had my husband race me to the emergency room.

Once we arrived, I felt some relief knowing I was in the care of medical professionals. I was sobbing through the pain, and all I could think was that I must be having a miscarriage.

But once I was about to receive care, the staff separated me from my husband and started interrogating me about what I did to cause this. And the truth was, I did nothing, I was experiencing severe complications through no intention of my own. But for some reason, their concern was not with saving me or my pregnancy, it was to attempt to put the cause of these complications, and the potential miscarriage, on me.

Once I got home from the ER, still in complete shock with what happened, my natural next step was to try to find a sense of community and comfort. I began to research online, seeing if this intense interrogation had happened to other pregnant women. To my surprise, not only had it happened to other women, but I found stories of women being further investigated, detained, and arrested for potentially “causing” their miscarriage.

In this moment, my life changed forever. It lit a fire under me, and I began my journey to fight for the right to our bodily autonomy. At this time in Ohio, where I was living at the time, Republicans were working to pass a 6-week abortion ban. So, I marched up to the Statehouse and stood strong in protest.

But I didn’t just go alone, I started to build a coalition of other women, both pregnant and not, to rally behind our rights to our own bodies. Our protest went viral – and I launched Pro Choice with Heart.

Since the first protest, I have spent the last five years holding hundreds of protests across the country and have built a network of thousands of activists working to defend abortion rights – all the while raising my son.

Now, with Roe v. Wade being overturned, this fight can’t wait. We cannot stand by and let Republicans like Congressman Darrell Issa win their seats without any competition. That’s why I’m stepping up to the plate and taking this fight one step further by running for Congress.
