Dear John,
After months of anticipation, this week the Senate finally released their bill to attempt to address the situation at the southern border. The American Immigration Council supports good faith efforts to tackle the many issues facing our U.S. immigration system and the people it impacts daily, and bipartisan compromise will be necessary if we are ever to make progress on these issues.
The bill identifies many of the right problems, but many of its proposed solutions would do more harm than good. [[link removed]]
Its key proposal for responding to increasing arrivals at the border—rapid expulsions of people seeking humanitarian protection—is an approach that has proven to be harmful and counterproductive under both the Trump and Biden administrations. The bill also proposes tougher screening standards for asylum seekers and more funding for immigration detention.

Though the bill offers some positive measures, like an overall increase in green cards and resources for more asylum officers, it’s silent on other pressing issues. It makes no mention of the plight of Dreamers and others who have lived in limbo for far too long.
We will keep fighting for an immigration system that better reflects our values and needs in the 21st century. Help us achieve our mission by making a gift today. [[link removed]]
Sincerely,
Jeremy Robbins
