America First Legal Announces Expanded Leadership Team to Advance Its Critical Mission
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, America First Legal (AFL) is pleased to announce strategic personnel changes to enhance its leadership team. These key personnel moves come at a critical time as AFL continues to increase its efforts to advance its fight against the destructive forces that threaten to tear the fabric of our nation apart and to advance the perpetual fight against executive overreach and abuses.
Gene Hamilton — Executive Director, Executive Vice President, and General Counsel
Since AFL’s inception three years ago, Gene Hamilton has served as Vice-President and General Counsel. He previously served as Counselor to the Attorney General at the Department of Justice; Senior Counselor to the Secretary of Homeland Security; General Counsel on the Senate Committee on the Judiciary; Assistant Chief Counsel at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement; and as an Attorney Advisor in the Secretary’s Honors Program for Attorneys at the Department of Homeland Security. Gene graduated from the Washington and Lee University School of Law magna cum laude and Order of the Coif and has a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs from the University of Georgia.
Gene will now serve as AFL’s Executive Director, Executive Vice President, and General Counsel.
Reed D. Rubinstein — Senior Vice President
Reed D. Rubinstein is a former Deputy Associate Attorney General, U.S. Department of Education General Counsel (acting and delegated), and Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury. A former AmLaw 10 shareholder, he spent more than thirty years in the private practice of law, representing manufacturing and retail corporations, financial institutions, trade associations, and individuals in constitutional, administrative, and complex commercial trial and appellate matters, including Executive Branch and Congressional oversight, investigations, and enforcement. Reed is a 1985 graduate of the University of Michigan Law School.
Mr. Rubinstein has served as Senior Counselor and Director of Oversight and Investigations since 2021 and will now serve as Senior Vice President.
Dan Epstein — Vice President
Dan Epstein is an Assistant Professor of Law at St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida. Before coming to AFL, he was the Director of Legal and Policy at Trust Ventures, a venture fund focused on regulated industries. Prior to joining Trust Ventures, Mr. Epstein served as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Associate Counsel to the President, where he managed the White House’s defense against investigations and litigation relating to access to information and records. Prior to his White House service, Mr. Epstein founded and ran Cause of Action, a public-interest law firm, where he represented clients in government investigations and litigated regulatory, constitutional, political, and public law matters. Earlier in his career, Mr. Epstein served as Counsel for the House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. He holds a Ph.D. from George Washington University in Political Economy, a J.D. from Emory University School of Law and a B.A. from Kenyon College. He is the author of The Investigative State: Regulatory Oversight in the United States, which reveals a new understanding of the origins of federal regulation and the nature of congressional oversight. His law review articles have been published or are forthcoming in Yale Journal on Regulation, University of Chicago Law Review, Dickinson Law Review, University of California Law Constitutional Quarterly, and Pepperdine Law Review, among others.
Dan Epstein will now serve as Vice President of AFL.
