Dear Friend,
The Senate is debating their latest coronavirus “relief” bill—and it's an abomination.
Senate Republicans are demanding a $500 billion slush fund that Trump can use to bail out cruise ships, hotels, airlines, and other giant corporations—cloaked in secrecy, with virtually zero strings attached. Even what they are now calling "oversight" is much too weak and can't be trusted, experts warn.
The industries set for bailout aren't required to provide paid sick leave to their workers. There are no real restrictions on using the money for executive bonuses or stock buybacks. And remember: these are the same corporations that just got a giant tax break and then spent it on CEO bonuses.
Meanwhile, what do the poorest Americans get?
Almost nothing.
Mitch McConnell's proposal would give most people on the bottom half of the income ladder a one-time payment of $600—and for millions of Americans, that payment would be even less.
Yes, you read that right: $600. It's not even enough for a month's rent in most places, never mind groceries and utilities.
Our newsroom team and contributors are shining a bright light on the Senate's corporate bailouts and its failure to help working people. But as a nonprofit media outlet, we rely on you, our readers, to power our work.
In these challenging and perilous times, we need your support more than ever.
In solidarity and thanks,
