Dear Friend,

Defeating poverty is a fight for the soul of our nation. And this fight is one we cannot lose.

Communities of color are often under-resourced, have limited access to quality education, face health disparities, and are disproportionately targeted by law enforcement. The history of race in America has created advantages for whites that continue to persist today. The end result is more Black Americans live in poverty than their white counterparts.

We deserve better – and defeating poverty will take work from all of us.

The Neighborhood Violence Intervention Program in Columbus, Ohio is just one example of the work taking place in 92 cities around the country. Since its conception, the program has reduced gang violence by:

✓ Keeping youth safe and on-track to lead productive lives,

Providing skills needed to find employment,

Negotiating 18 peace agreements with gangs,

Placing intervention specialists in high-risk neighborhoods, and

Deescalating hundreds of documented incidents

This holistic approach allows youth to engage in work readiness activities, academics, and recreation while avoiding gang involvement.

Your monthly commitment is needed to fuel our efforts, just like the Neighborhood Violence Intervention Program, and break the cycle of poverty for people of color. By joining our Opportunity Circle monthly giving program this Black History Month, you will help create opportunities all year long for minorities who otherwise would be forgotten.

The National Urban League touches 3.2 million lives annually – placing 246,000 people in jobs. Just 1 person makes a profound difference. Join the monthly fight now to Defend Democracy, Demand Diversity, and DEFEAT POVERTY.

Defeating poverty is achievable.

The National Urban League’s life-changing programs are crucial to defeating poverty. Ms. Albertha Sheppard-Jews was at risk for homelessness after leaving the workforce to care for her elderly mother. When she joined our affiliate in Florida, she didn’t know where to start or what career to pursue. The training and support she received allowed her to get a job as a nanny caretaker, a new place to call home, and a brighter outlook on life.

Every American deserves access to jobs with a living wage and good benefits. Defeating poverty is achievable, but we all must work together. Join our Opportunity Circle monthly giving program to do your part to Defend, Demand, and Defeat. Your community is counting on you during Black History Month.

Sincerely,

Marc H. Morial

President and Chief Executive Officer

P.S. – There are more ways to give. If you have a donor-advised fund, you can designate a gift to the National Urban League. Thank you!
