Right now, our representatives in Congress are considering a deal that would eviscerate long-standing asylum protections, vastly expand immigration detention and surveillance, and leave countless people at risk.

Our immigration system needs to be modernized to address the challenges at the border – but adopting variations of the Trump administration's playbook will only create more suffering and chaos at our border and goes against everything our country was built on.

Those seeking safety at the border should have a fair chance to make their case for asylum.

We should be working to support border communities and pass humane policies to address the immigration case backlog – not destroying the already-insufficient structures we have to protect people seeking asylum.
