Real Places 2024 registrants have been busy booking rooms recently, as the conference rate room block we had secured at the Renaissance Austin Hotel (the conference venue) sold out suddenly! Our conference room rate block at the nearby Embassy Suites by Hilton Austin Arboretum has almost sold out, too.

If you?re attending Real Places 2024, need lodging, and missed the conference rates at the hotels above, there are other options in the area. Both the Renaissance and Embassy Suites hotels have regular-priced rooms available for the week of the conference. The Holiday Inn currently has rooms at $168 per night for the week of the conference, while Sonesta Arboretum rates start at $153, though prices are subject to change. We advise attendees to book their rooms now to lock in the best available price.
As always, Real Places offers a broad array of interactive workshops and tours in addition to the conference. The 2024 offerings are particularly impressive, with two tours and nine workshops on topics such as grave marker preservation, masonry restoration, developing podcasts for museums and historic sites, interpreting slavery, nonprofit fund development, and more.
These pre-conference activities will take place on Wednesday, April 3, at different times between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. All workshops and tours include lunch, and transportation is included for offsite events.
One offsite pre-conference activity offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go where the public cannot inside the Texas Capitol. Thanks to the generosity of the Texas State Preservation Board (TSPB) and Real Places title sponsor Phoenix I Restoration and Construction, LLC, conference registrants can sign up to go behind the scenes at the Capitol. Participants in ?Dome Ask, Dome Tell: An Insider?s Tour of the Capitol Dome? will get a near-birds-eye view of the reroofing project with the people who are working on it. Dale Sellers, president and chief executive officer of Phoenix I, will serve as tour guide along with other Phoenix I personnel and staff from the TSPB, which is responsible for the daily preservation of the building and grounds.
?A Guided Tour of Austin Tax Credit Projects? will give participants a better understanding of historic tax credit projects, which range widely in scale and use. THC staff will lead this tour showcasing examples of completed, certified projects in Austin, answer questions, and provide attendees with the knowledge of what a successful tax credit project looks like and motivation to apply these lessons to their own properties and communities.
High wind, flooding, and wildfire events can threaten any community. Would yours be ready? The ?Disaster Strikes! How to Prepare and Recover? workshop will discuss the challenges related to historic resources subject to disasters and provide strategies to leverage local community resources through outreach and collaboration. Attendees will be able to discuss these issues and learn how to utilize disaster forms and templates for their own historic buildings, communities, and neighborhoods.
