Liz WillenDear reader,

In the darkest of these shut-in coronavirus days, you can find little glimmers of hope and inspiration. Like the students who say they hate school, but miss it when they can no longer go. Or the strangers who purchased boxes of diapers for a pregnant community college student in line at Costco at 3 a.m., or the many volunteers helping stranded students.

These are just a few of the ways we’re covering the coronavirus crisis as it unfolds. You can find all of our reporting on how the pandemic is affecting education here, including tips and free resources for families with small children at home, homeschooling strategies and a comprehensive look at how the virus is disrupting higher education.

How are you coping? We want to hear your tales of struggle, inspiration and survival tips.

Main Idea

In dark days of coronavirus, a little kindness can restore students’ faith

There’s no playbook for handling the unprecedented coronavirus calamity, but I’m quickly seeing what a big difference offers of help, financial assistance and even phone calls of concern can make. With a little luck, the power of kindness and generosity will be one of the key takeaways of this crisis when it abates, as will newfound appreciation for teachers. (Just ask a parent trying to take the place of educators while working from home.)
