Diverse Teams Feel Less Comfortable and Thats Why They Perform Better - Harvard Business Review (..) In numerous studies, diversity — both inherent (e.g., race, gender) and acquired (experience, cultural background) — is associated with business success. For example, a 2009 analysis of 506 companies found that firms with more racial or gender diversity had more sales revenue, more customers, and greater profits. A 2016 analysis of more than 20,000 firms in 91 countries found that companies with more female executives were more profitable. In a 2011 study management teams exhibiting a wider range of educational and work backgrounds produced more-innovative products. These are mere correlations, but laboratory experiments have also shown the direct effect of diversity on team performance. In a 2006 study of mock juries, for example, when black people were added to the jury, white jurors processed the case facts more carefully and deliberated more effectively.

WorkLayoffs are plaguing the healthcare industry, too Feb. 6: Travel nursing startup Nomad Health announces job cuts, following layoffs last October that affected 17% of its workforce. Amazon says it’s eliminating hundreds of roles from its healthcare division, Amazon Health Services. And biotech company Rallybio slashes 45% of its staffers. WorkWorkHigh interest rates are causing more car loan delinquencies, Fed researchers say In December, the US Bureau of Statistics reported that the inflation rate for new vehicles lowered to 1%. For comparison, inflation rates for new vehicles in December 2022 was 5.9%. “This diverging pattern between origination amount and the monthly payment over the last year can be explained by the increase in interest rates on auto loans,” the researchers wrote. WorkWorkMeta Calls for Industry Effort to Label A.I.-Generated Content As the United States enters a presidential election year, industry watchers believe that A.I. tools will be widely used to post fake content to misinform voters. Over the past year, people have used A.I to create and spread fake videos of President Biden making false or inflammatory statements. The attorney general’s office in New Hampshire is also investigating a series of robocalls that appeared to employ an A.I.-generated voice of Mr. Biden that urged people not to vote in a recent primary. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkHouthis claim fresh attacks on British and US ships in Red Sea The reshuffle will reflect concerns in the US about the quality of the anti-Houthi alliance in the country. The prime minister is overseen by a disparate eight-strong presidential leadership council, some of whom are backed by Saudi Arabia and others by the United Arab Emirates. WorkNevada presidential primary election - live results Failed 2020 presidential candidate Marianne Williamson, who also unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the US House of Representatives in 2014, became the first Democratic candidate to announce she was running for president as a challenge to Biden. Williamson, an author of self-help books, launched her long-shot bid with campaign promises to address climate change and student loan debt. She previously worked as "spiritual leader" of a Michigan Unity church. WorkSnap misses revenue estimate, shares plunge 30% In a letter to shareholders on Tuesday, Snap said it would shift more of its focus this year to increasing Snapchat\'s user base and investing in markets where the tech company earns the most money, including North America and Europe. WorkWorkMother of Michigan Gunman Found Guilty of Manslaughter “We all know that this is one of the hardest things you’ve ever done,” Judge Cheryl Matthews of the Oakland County Circuit Court told jurors at the courthouse in Pontiac, Mich., immediately after the verdict was read. WorkIn Los Angeles, a Growing Sense That ‘Historic’ Weather Is Becoming Normal It has always rained during the winter in Los Angeles, never mind the song that says otherwise. But the succession of extreme weather events — an onslaught of storms a year ago, Tropical Storm Hilary in August and now this marathon of atmospheric rivers — has made Angelenos think that such “historic” occurrences may not be so historic anymore in an era of climate change. WorkSeizures of Psychedelic Mushrooms Rise in U.S. as Demand Grows “Psychedelic drugs have been promoted as a potential cure for many health conditions without adequate research to support these claims,” Dr. Volkow said. “There are people who are very desperate for mental health care, and there are businesses that are very eager to make money by marketing substances as treatments or cures.” WorkForceful Opinion Repudiates Claim That Trump Can’t Be Charged in Election Case Still, Mr. Trump’s claim of total immunity introduces a momentous legal issue the Supreme Court has never considered — no former president has ever been charged with crimes before, so there is no direct precedent. Normally, the justices might see it as appropriate to weigh in, too, even if it were merely to affirm an appeals court’s handiwork. WorkRonna McDaniel, R.N.C. Chairwoman, Plans to Step Down Mr. Trump and his associates have made focusing on election security a signature point they plan to push in a general election. There has been no evidence of widespread fraud related to the 2020 voting, and Mr. Trump’s allies lost dozens of court challenges. Mr. Trump has told associates that he thinks the R.N.C. needs to spend more money on “election integrity” in the 2024 race. Mr. Trump’s team is also focused on hiring teams of poll watchers, which the North Carolina G.O.P. did during the midterms in 2022. Work9 Key Revelations in Maui’s First Review of the Lahaina Inferno But the majority were in the city center. About one-third of them were found along Kuhua Street, a short road lined with residences on one side, about a half-mile from the shore. That street has a dead end to the west, and survivors have described how they struggled to escape to the east because a downed tree was blocking the roadway. WorkWorkTrump Pardon Recipient Fined $20 Million in Predatory Lending Case “Among other things, Mr. Braun threatened to send the consumer to jail and said, using profanity, that he would spit on” the customer’s face on visiting day, the judge said. “Mr. Braun told the consumer to drive his Honda ‘off a cliff’ and that he hoped the consumer’s wife would leave him.” Throughout the call, the judge said, Mr. Braun also called the consumer names including a “loser,” a “degenerate” and a number of obscenities. WorkWorkWhat’s Next in the Federal Election Case Against Trump? The panel said that Mr. Trump had until Monday to ask the Supreme Court to get involved in the case and continue a stay of all of the underlying proceedings. The case was initially put on hold by the trial judge in December. WorkMike Reed, the R.N.C.’s Chief of Staff, Is Stepping Down His memo sought to paint a rosy picture of the state of the party and Ms. McDaniel’s leadership, contending that both were on solid footing. It described recent conversations between Ms. McDaniel and Mr. Trump as upbeat. Politico reported that they met on Monday at Mar-a-Lago, Mr. Trump’s members-only club in Florida. WorkClyde Taylor, Literary Scholar Who Elevated Black Cinema, Dies at 92 As Dr. Taylor documented, these directors created their own, stripped-down approach to narrative and form. They borrowed from French New Wave, Italian neorealism and Brazil’s Cinema Novo to offer an unblinkered look at everyday Black life, often filming in Watts and other Black neighborhoods in and around Los Angeles. WorkTexas Company Was Behind Voter Robocalls That Impersonated Biden, N.H. Says The robocalls told New Hampshire residents — using a voice that was most likely generated by artificial intelligence to sound like Mr. Biden’s — that they should not participate in the state’s primary on Jan. 23 because “your vote makes a difference in November, not this Tuesday.” Voting in a primary does not prevent anyone from casting a ballot in the general election. WorkOn the Border, Republicans Set a Trap, Then Fell Into It It left Senate Republicans, who had mainly avoided the chaos that has consumed House Republicans for the past two years, looking more like their counterparts across the rotunda, rocked by division, finger-pointing and even calls from the far right for new leadership. WorkTrump Says Ronna McDaniel ‘Knows’ She Should Step Down as R.N.C. Chair His remarks on Monday expanded on his less-than-glowing assessment of Ms. McDaniel’s performance during an interview on Sunday on Fox News. When he was asked how she had been doing as the committee’s leader, Mr. Trump praised Ms. McDaniel for her previous role in helping him win Michigan during the 2016 election, when she was the state party chairwoman. WorkBiden Tells Congress to ‘Show Some Spine’ Against Trump on Border Deal The deadlock raised questions about whether Congress would be able to salvage the emergency aid package and, if so, how. Speaker Mike Johnson sought to advance aid to Israel alone by pushing a separate $17.6 billion measure. But it ran into strong resistance from hard-right Republicans, as well as Democrats and Mr. Biden, who threatened a veto, and failed to garner the two-thirds vote needed for passage on Tuesday evening. WorkWith Demise of Border Deal, No Clear Path for Ukraine and Israel Aid in Congress Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the Democratic leader, told lawmakers on Tuesday morning that he and the party’s top leaders would oppose the Israel-only bill, saying that while they were “prepared to support any serious, bipartisan effort” to help Israel, the legislation was “not being offered in good faith.” WorkTrucker Hats and Ice Cream: The Most Surprising Ways Candidates Spent Cash His filing lamentably provides few details, but according to this photograph from The New Hampshire Union Leader, at least one of the hats is a trucker design emblazoned with the letters “W.T.F.” — “Way to Freedom.” The overall hat expense was part of a $5 million outlay to Victory Enterprises, a political consulting group in Iowa. WorkExplaining a Major Education Settlement in California In California, Compton Unified, near Los Angeles, and Delano Unified, north of Bakersfield, are examples of lower-income school districts that have recovered remarkably well, at least judging by standardized-test scores. You can read more about bright-spot districts, including Delano Unified, in an article I wrote with my colleagues Claire Cain Miller and Francesca Paris. WorkWorkWorkWhat to Watch in Nevada’s Weird Election Week Perhaps more than that, the race in Nevada has emerged as an object lesson of what Mr. Trump — who has spent years accusing Democrats of tampering with election rules — has done, in the courts and through aggressive use of party rules, to assure that he wins his party’s nomination. (There is also a Democratic primary, but President Biden has the field pretty much to himself). WorkGroup in Michigan Urges Protest Vote Against Biden Over Israel-Gaza War An NBC News poll released Sunday found just 29 percent of voters approved of Mr. Biden’s handling of the war between Israel and Hamas — including just 15 percent of voters younger than 35. Among Democrats, the poll found that 44 percent approved of Mr. Biden’s handling of the war in Gaza, while 45 percent disapproved. WorkWorkWorkPalantir's stock surged as AI demand drives revenue Karp said that proliferation and interest in LLMs “mean little without an effective way of allowing those systems to interact with an organization’s underlying and proprietary data.” And Palantir wants to deliver on that. Industry experts have said before that generative AI products are most useful when it’s combined with proprietary data. Karp noted in his letter that generative AI-driven products will be the future of its company. Investors seemed to agree. WorkAn updated list of 2024 tech layoffs: Snapchat, Zoom, Microsoft, and more Some of the tech layoffs may also be fueling a surge in applications for new businesses, as the latest Census data shows a high-propensity of business applications coming most from the West, a tech-heavy region, and not from corporations. These people may have more cash to plow into a new business than people laid off from blue-collar jobs. Work7 unexpected uses for Apple's Vision Pro headset Game emulators are already making their way to the Apple Vision Pro. With the mandatory touch-only controls, it seems to be quite an annoying way to play some of the earlier Pokémon titles. The Vision Pro supports a few modern Xbox and PlayStation controllers, which opens up avenues for emulation using more modern control setups. WorkNASA's Mars Rovers have a lot of secrets NASA’s Opportunity rover snapped the first-ever image of a comet from the surface of Mars. On October 19, 2014, Comet C/2013 A1 Siding Spring passed much closer to Mars than any previous known comet flyby of Earth or Mars, missing the Red Planet by a mere 87,000 miles (139,500 kilometers). Opportunity was there to witness this moment in celestial history, snapping a fuzzy image of the Oort cloud comet as it made its way across the pre-dawn Martian sky. WorkWorkWorkWorkBoeing is bracing for more US government "boots on the ground" In any case, the FAA’s Whitaker is telling Congress that his agency will be “aggressively expanding oversight of new aircraft with increased floor presence at all Boeing facilities,” and “capping expanded production of new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to ensure accountability and full compliance with required quality control procedures.” WorkWorkJPMorgan is growing by actually building more banks “We want customers to feel welcomed when they walk through the door,” Diedra Porche, the head of Chase’s community and business development, said in a statement. “Far too often, people are intimidated when they visit a bank. Our Community Centers are specifically designed to change that. We hire locally from the community because we know sometimes it’s easier to talk to a neighbor when a customer has a problem or needs advice on buying a home, saving for college or retirement, or simply opening a checking account.” WorkSpotify raised prices and still hit a record for new subscribers “While exclusivities were net positive on the side, it’s not driving as much as the opportunity that we see on the ad side,” Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said Tuesday on a call with investors. “By broadening distribution, we think we can accomplish a number of different goals. Most notable among them, we are going to be more aligned with the creator.” WorkWorkThe meaning of one of Toby Keith's biggest hits But perhaps Keith\'s intentions weren\'t so divisive. By focusing on the plight of military members and telling their stories in his music, he struck a single note that in the current climate of extreme partisanship, feels almost quaint. WorkFacebook and Instagram to label all fake AI images Because it was not manipulated using artificial intelligence, and depicted Mr Biden behaving in a way he did not, rather than saying something he did not, it did not violate Meta\'s manipulated media policy - and was not removed. WorkBoeing: Bolts missing from door, says blowout report Last month, Boeing\'s chief executive Dave Calhoun told staff at the company it would co-operate with investigators and regulators \"to ensure all the procedures are put into place, inspections, all the readiness actions that are required to ensure every next airplane that moves into the sky is in fact safe and that this event can never happen again\". WorkHS2 now offers 'very poor value for money', MPs warn \"The permanent secretary has already written to the committee chair setting out her assessment on value for money, and we have repeatedly made clear we will continue to deliver HS2 at the lowest reasonable cost, in a way that provides value for taxpayers,\" they added. WorkIncome needed to retire jumps as family costs rise Women retire on average with pension savings of £69,000, compared with £205,000 for men. Options from these savings include keeping them invested and partially drawn as an income, or used to buy an annuity which provides an annual pension income. |
