Geraldine Tyler, an elderly homeowner from Minnesota, had sadly lost her home due to unpaid taxes. Her condo was valued at $40,000, and after it was seized to pay $15,000 in property taxes, her county kept the difference!

This was legal under state law, and even routine in many states. This practice, commonly known as Home Equity Theft, is an unjust practice that Atlas Network partner organization Pacific Legal Foundation rightly observed was unconstitutional under the Fifth Amendment's takings clause.

As one of our more than 500 partners across the globe, we provide the team at Pacific Legal Foundation with training, grants, and mentorship with like-minded partners around the world, so they can raise their ambitions and make an even bigger impact with their mission.

After two years of legal battles that ultimately led to the United States Supreme Court, the Pacific Legal Foundation achieved a historic victory. This past spring, the Supreme Court rejected Home Equity Theft in a unanimous decision, marking a historic win for our partner and a significant step forward in protecting property rights. States are now legally bound to return the remaining proceeds of a seizure to the owner.

Geraldine Tyler is just one person among countless others who have been impacted by the lack of well-defined property rights.
