Today marks the two year anniversary of the March for Our Lives. The student-led march that took place following the tragic school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that took the lives of 17 students and staff members.
The march was historic. Turning tragedy into action, it taught us some valuable lessons in our efforts to make our communities safer from gun violence.
We learned the hard truth that our children shouldn't have to walk out of their schools or march in the streets to demand that their leaders in Congress keep them safe.
We learned that these student leaders showed more courage and conviction in their calls to stop gun violence than many members of Congress ever have.
And we learned that our elected officials are beginning to understand that they have more to fear from us than from the gun lobby and all of their money and influence.
So today we continue to work with these courageous young people and their ongoing mission to pass universal background checks and safer gun laws. If we stand together, nothing can stop us. But we can’t do it alone, so we have to ask:
We hope that you’ll take a minute today to reflect on the March for Our Lives and what it meant for so many young people and activists across the country.
Our movement to save lives from gun violence is making progress, make no mistake about it. We never would have elected a Democratic House that would pass universal background checks without your support. We will continue to fight on, together.
