This will save lives, if the General Assembly enacts it.
Gun Violence Prevention Advocate,
Governor Shapiro just proposed investing $100 million to combat gun violence--including a significant CeaseFirePA request to inspect gun dealers to ensure they aren’t enabling firearm trafficking.
This is a big deal, but without your voice, it could get cut by the General Assembly.
1 That’s precisely what happened last year, endangering community-centered violence prevention programs that reduced gun homicides by 20% in Philadelphia and 27% in Pittsburgh.
Tens of millions for community-based violence prevention programs such as hospital-based intervention efforts, credible messengers that deescalate conflict, and trauma healing programs for youth.
Creation of the Commonwealth’s Office of Gun Violence Prevention under the leadership of Lt. Governor Davis.
Expanding inspections of gun dealers (a CeaseFirePA priority) to stop the diversion of firearms into underground markets. Just 1% of dealers are responsible for more than half of all recovered crime guns, but inspections only happen once every five years. 2
Last year, Governor Shapiro proposed a similar amount, but Senate Republicans slashed it to just $40 million. I know it sounds like a lot, but with 1,900 lives lost in 2022 and thousands more injured by firearms, we need the General Assembly to know public safety is a top priority.
Sincerely, Adam Garber Executive Director CeaseFirePA Action
