Exciting news for our organization! No images? Click here ![]() ![]() John, Over the past decade, we have evolved to prioritize environmental justice. The systems that oppress people also pollute our communities, air, and water, and threaten our climate. Our commitment to environmental justice and our record of leading state-wide efforts to protect Washington's environment is why we’ve received funding from groups like the Bullitt Foundation for many years. In 2024, the Bullitt Foundation is ceasing operations and grantmaking but asked us to carry forward their legacy by taking care of one more task. Which is why I’m thrilled to share with you that WCA Education Fund will be awarding the esteemed Bullitt Prize in perpetuity! The annual $100,000 Bullitt Prize recognizes the emerging generation of leaders for conservation and environmental justice. Since 2007, the Bullitt Foundation has awarded 17 people with the annual prize for demonstrated ability as social and environmental leaders. In March, we will open the 2024 Bullitt Prize application. While plans are still evolving, WCA Education Fund hopes to broaden the reach of the prize, not only for academics but to consider professional or grassroots leadership, those 35 or younger, and a focus on conservation and environmental justice. We plan to honor the selected individual or group in December. This news is exciting–we hope you feel so, too! We will broaden, strengthen, and diversify the current and future leadership of the environmental movement by investing in emerging leaders advancing conservation and environmental justice efforts in the Pacific Northwest with $100,000 each year! As Denis Hayes, CEO of the Bullitt Foundation and national organizer of the first Earth Day in 1970 remarked, “No group is better equipped to identify the next generation of leaders for conservation and environmental justice than Washington Conservation Action Education Fund. We're proud to pass the annual $100,000 Bullitt Prize to such a superb organization.” We’ll share more and make available the application at www.bullittprize.org. Onward, Alyssa Macy (she/her) |
