When a series of powerful earthquakes struck Syria and Türkiye one year ago, the devastation was immediate. Buildings and homes collapsed, nearly 60,000 people lost their lives, and thousands more became displaced once again.

IRC teams in the region responded immediately to deliver emergency supplies, provide care through mobile health clinics, and support survivors. John, that emergency response was only possible because of compassionate people like you, who showed up at that moment.

And because people are at the heart of our work at the IRC, I wanted to make sure to share a story from a recent trip to Syria about how your support is making a difference. Meet Aysha →

Aysha, her husband, and her young son were in bed asleep when the earthquake struck. It was traumatic — and the aftermath was even worse. The earthquakes destroyed their home, all their belongings and their livelihood. Both Aysha and her husband were left jobless, along with countless others affected by the earthquake.

A year later, the family is still living in a tent, exposed to the elements. For Aysha, it feels like the earth hasn’t stopped shaking. But she is determined to work her way back to solid ground.

Aysha attended classes through an IRC program designed to help displaced women start their own small businesses. She cooks and makes jam to earn a living. That income allows her family to afford their living costs — food, heating fuel, and new clothing for her children.

"My child's smile when I buy him a biscuit means the world to me. But I don't care about food and drinks as much as I care about my children's safety. My children's happiness means the entire world to me."
