I'm at the UN Tobacco Control talks demanding governments make Big Tobacco pay!

Dear Friend,

Right now, I’m at the U.N. global talks on tobacco control with a team of organizers, policy experts, and allies. And we just delivered tens of thousands (over 30,000!) of signatures to Government delegates attending the tobacco treaty talks showing the broad support from people around the globe to make Big Tobacco pay for its deadly products.

These talks are a critical venue to advance our collective campaign to hold Big Tobacco accountable and liable for its deadly products. And to do so in a way that has the most impact for the most people around the world.

There is a crucial resolution being considered by governments at these negotiations being led by a coalition of countries from the Global South to enhance measures that will make it easier for countries to pursue liability against tobacco. This resolution could help pave the way for recovering billions of dollars in healthcare and environmental costs. And to make the most out of this moment we have, we’re trying to put as much public pressure on the decision-makers here at the talks as possible.

This will ensure that government delegates at the talks know that people are paying attention to the outcomes of these negotiations and know making the tobacco industry pay is a top priority! It’s absolutely essential that we show up to these meetings because more than 8 million people die from tobacco-related diseases every year. Despite this, we are filling the coffers of one of the world’s most deadly industries with our taxes, our health, our lives, and our planet. But together we have the power to hold this deadly industry accountable and push governments to make Big Tobacco pay.

I’m asking you to take action via Twitter because, at this moment, it’s the most public and most effective way to get the attention of decision-makers at the tobacco control talks. I know not everyone is on Twitter, and there will certainly be further actions to take as well.
